Another political blog?
I am a Filipina commuter and often find myself hopping from tricycle, to 10-seater taxis, to buses, trains and pedicabs.
*Padyak (puhd-jak') is what the pedicab in the Philippines is otherwise known.
Pedicabs run on pedal and lung power, are cheap transports anywhere, emit no toxic fumes into the atmosphere, are easy to maintain, and offer the least protection for driver and passenger.
Padyaks offer no appropriate protection from the sun and rain, and, given the make-shift, synthetic materials used for its canopy, limits the view of the passenger to just the left or right. The metal floor bars either give an occasional "bonus" scenery or confirms one's sense of direction.
The padyak was once the icon of choice of a Filipino politician, pedaling in a TV ad in designer shoes and tailored clothes, aimed at connecting him with the local folks. However, it was, in my view, inauthentic and improper, like much of the myths that politicians create out of themselves.
They are our demigods, our politicians, whose words, always with the aid of a microphone, boom like thunder, expecting these to cut through and reverberate into our souls in the hope of jolting us blind to their commands, at their beck and call.
Pedikabpolitics is about one's view of political life in the Philippines from the passenger seat of a padyak (or a tricycle, a 10-seater taxi, bus or train).
